189 N. Bernardo Avenue, Suite 100, Mountain View, CA 94043

    What:

    • 6:45pm-7:00pm: Socializing/networking. During the evening anyone in the audience is welcome to present their work in 30 seconds.
    • 7:00-7:30:
    • Bathsheba Grossman (Artist) on "3D Printing Sculpture" Freeform fabrication in archival materials has made a Gutenberg moment for sculpture: printing metal and glass in short runs at reasonable prices doesn't just create a new medium, it also drives new business models.
    • 7:30-8:00:
    • Phillip Prager (Cambridge University and Minerva Foundation) on "What is creativity? Debunking myths and implications for interactive media" Scientific accounts of creativity have little in common with classical, romantic and psychoanalytic notions. There remains great potential for instantiating principles of creative cognition with interactive design methodologies.
    • 8:00-8:30: BREAK
    • 8:30-9:00:
    • Peter Foucault (SFAI) on "Systems and Interactivity in Drawing" How drawings are constructed through mark making systems, and how audience participation can influence the outcome of a final composition, focusing on an interactive robotic drawing installation
    • 9:00-9:30:
    • Wayne Vitale (Gamelan Sekar Jaya) on "The Aesthetics of Oscillation in Balinese Music." The gamelan orchestras of Bali are famous for their brilliant ensemble virtuosity. Based on Hindu cosmology, the Balinese concept of rwa bhineda (interdependent opposites) is manifest in the tiniest details of musical elaboration.
    • 9:30: Piero Scaruffi on the next Leonardo Art/Science evening I will simply preview the line-up of speakers for the next Leonardo evening.
    • 9:30pm-10:00pm: Discussions, more socializing You can mingle with the speakers and the audience

    Bios:
    • Peter Foucault creates works on paper, videos, and installations that are fueled by his love of drawing and mark making. He has created a series of Drawing-Projects, which utilize systems developed by the artist that produce complex abstract compositions. Viewer interactivity plays an integral part in his drawing installations, large-scale artworks in which participants influence the outcome of a drawing that is created by a small robot over the duration of an event or exhibition.
    • Bathsheba Grossman is a mathematical sculptor, instantiating her own designs as well as scientific illustrations as 3D physical objects. She is a pioneer in the use of freeform fabrication in metal for art, as well as 3D laser etching in glass.
    • Phillip Prager has recently completed his PhD at the Cambridge University Digital Studio and is currently a postdoctoral fellow at the Minerva Foundation in Berkeley. His work relates scientific research on creativity and play to the historical and digital avant-garde.
    • Piero Scaruffi is a cognitive scientist who has lectured in three continents and published several books on Artificial Intelligence and Cognitive Science, the latest one being "The Nature of Consciousness" (2006). He pioneered Internet applications in the early 1980s and the use of the World-Wide Web for cultural purposes in the mid 1990s. His poetry has been awarded several national prizes in Italy and the USA. His latest book of poems and meditations is "Synthesis" (2009). As a music historian, he has published ten books, the latest ones being "A History of Rock and Dance Music" (2009) and "A History of Jazz Music" (2007). He has also written extensively about cinema, literature and the visual arts. An avid traveler, he has visited 121 countries of the world.
    • Wayne Vitale is a composer, performer, teacher, recording engineer, and instrument conservator in the field of Balinese music. He directed Gamelan Sekar Jaya (www.gsj.org), a group of sixty musicians and dancers recognized internationally for its cross-cultural work, for more than 18 years. His gamelan compositions have directly impacted the evolution of Balinese kebyar music. His recording label, Vital Records (www.vitalrecords.ws), releases critically acclaimed CDs of Balinese music. He is currently Robert M. Trotter Visiting Professar at the University of Oregon; and is also working with the famed gamelan ensemble from the village of Tunjuk, Bali, to create MAKROKOSMA BALI, a multimedia work to be performed at the Asian Art Museum in May 2011.
